How to Start Astrophotography: A Complete Beginner’s Guide for 2026

Astrophotography has never been more accessible. Modern sensors, affordable tracking mounts, and AI-powered stacking software have made it possible to capture stunning night-sky images without a massive budget or years of experience. As someone who has introduced many students to astrophotography, here’s the clearest path to getting started.

Three Stages of Astrophotography (Start at Stage 1)

Astrophotography exists on a spectrum of complexity and equipment cost. Don’t skip ahead — start simple, build skills, then invest in more advanced gear when you understand what you actually need.

Stage 1: Smartphone and Basic DSLR Photography (No Tracking)

The simplest form of astrophotography requires only a camera, a tripod, and a clear dark sky. A modern smartphone can capture the Milky Way. Any DSLR or mirrorless camera does even better.

Settings for Milky Way Photography

  • ISO: 1600–6400 (start at 3200)
  • Aperture: As wide as possible (f/1.8–f/2.8)
  • Shutter speed: Use the “500 rule” — 500 ÷ focal length = maximum shutter speed in seconds before stars trail. At 24mm, that’s about 20 seconds.
  • Focus: Manual focus on a bright star or at infinity

Shoot in RAW format for maximum processing flexibility. Take multiple shots and combine them in software (Sequator is free and excellent for stacking widefield images to reduce noise).

Stage 2: Tracked Widefield Astrophotography

A star tracker (also called a sky tracker) is a motorized mount that rotates your camera in sync with Earth’s rotation, allowing much longer exposures without star trailing. This is the biggest single upgrade in early astrophotography.

Recommended entry-level star trackers include the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini (about $150) and the iOptron SkyGuider Pro (about $280). With a star tracker, you can shoot exposures of 1–3 minutes, dramatically increasing the amount of light you capture and the detail visible in nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.

Setup: polar align the tracker (point at Polaris), mount your camera on a ball head on the tracker, balance, start tracking. Set your exposures to 60–120 seconds and take 20–30 frames. Stack them in DSS (DeepSkyStacker, free) or Sequator to combine the frames and reduce noise dramatically.

Stage 3: Telescope Astrophotography

Attaching a camera to a telescope opens up detailed imaging of planets, nebulae, and galaxies — but also adds significant complexity. You’ll need:

  • A telescope suitable for imaging (shorter focal ratios like f/5–f/7 are easier to work with)
  • An equatorial GoTo mount with motor drive
  • A DSLR, mirrorless camera, or dedicated astronomy camera (cooled CMOS cameras are ideal)
  • A T-ring and adapter to connect camera to telescope
  • Stacking software (DSS, Siril — both free)
  • Image processing software (PixInsight is the industry standard; free alternatives include GIMP with GraXpert)
