The terms Dobsonian and Newtonian are often confused, and understandably so. After explaining this distinction to countless students over the years, here is the clearest explanation I know.
The Newtonian Reflector: An Optical Design
A Newtonian reflector is an optical design — a type of telescope that uses a parabolic primary mirror to collect and focus light, with a flat secondary mirror near the top of the tube to redirect the focused light to an eyepiece on the side. This design was invented by Isaac Newton in 1668 and remains one of the most popular telescope designs in the world. The key point: Newtonian reflector describes the optics — the mirrors and how they work together. It says nothing about the mount or form factor of the telescope.
The Dobsonian: A Mount Design
A Dobsonian is not an optical design — it is a mount design. Specifically, it is a type of altazimuth mount invented by amateur astronomer John Dobson in the 1960s, designed to hold large Newtonian reflectors in a simple, stable, and affordable way. The Dobsonian mount consists of a rocker box (allowing left-right azimuth movement) and a trunnion bearing system (allowing the tube to tilt up and down in altitude), typically using Teflon pads on laminate bearings for smooth friction-controlled movement.
So: every Dobsonian telescope contains a Newtonian optical tube. But not every Newtonian reflector is on a Dobsonian mount. A Newtonian can be placed on an equatorial mount, a GoTo AZ mount, or any other type.
What Makes Dobsonians Special
Maximum Aperture for Minimum Cost
John Dobson’s insight was that a simple low-cost mount could put a large mirror in reach of ordinary people. An 8-inch (200mm) Dobsonian costs about $400-$500. A 12-inch (300mm) Dobsonian costs about $700-$900 — and nothing in that price range on any other mount type comes close to 12 inches of aperture. For visual deep-sky observing, nothing beats a Dobsonian for value.
Simple and Intuitive to Use
Push the tube where you want to look, and it stays there. No polar alignment, no counterweights, no slow-motion controls to wrestle. This simplicity makes Dobsonians beloved by beginners and veterans alike.
Limitations
The standard Dobsonian has no tracking — objects drift through the field as Earth rotates, requiring manual nudging every minute at higher magnification. Long-exposure astrophotography is not practical on a standard Dobsonian. GoTo Dobsonians address tracking for visual observing but remain unsuitable for long-exposure imaging.
Newtonian on an Equatorial Mount
A Newtonian on an equatorial mount combines the excellent optics and value of a Newtonian with the tracking capability of an equatorial mount. This is better for astrophotography and high-magnification visual observing where tracking matters. The trade-off: heavier, more complex setup, and polar alignment required. The MEEZAA 150EQ is a classic example — a 150mm Newtonian on an equatorial mount.
Which Should You Choose?
For pure visual observing with maximum aperture at minimum cost: choose a Dobsonian. The Sky-Watcher 6-inch or 8-inch Dobsonian gives you more light-gathering power than almost any other instrument at the same price. For a balance of visual observing and basic astrophotography capability: choose a Newtonian on an equatorial mount. For serious astrophotography: consider a dedicated imaging refractor on a GoTo equatorial mount.
