How Telescope Filters Work
All telescope filters work on the same principle: they block certain wavelengths of light while passing others. By selectively blocking unwanted light (sky glow, light pollution, or competing wavelengths) and passing the wavelengths emitted by the target object, filters increase contrast and reveal detail that would otherwise be lost. Most filters thread directly onto the barrel of a 1.25-inch or 2-inch eyepiece.
Moon Filter (Neutral Density Filter)
The Moon filter is the simplest and most universally useful telescope filter. The full Moon is so intensely bright through a telescope that it causes eye discomfort and washes out fine detail. A neutral density Moon filter reducing light transmission to 13-25% transforms the experience, revealing subtle surface detail and making extended sessions comfortable. OIII Narrowband Filter
OIII filters pass only the emission lines of doubly-ionized oxygen at around 496nm and 501nm — a primary emission source in planetary nebulae and supernova remnants. They dramatically improve views of the Veil Nebula, Dumbbell Nebula, Ring Nebula, and Blinking Planetary. Recommended: Lumicon OIII Filter at $90-$120, one of the originals and still among the finest.
UHC (Ultra-High Contrast) Filter
UHC filters pass both H-beta and OIII emission lines simultaneously, making them a versatile choice for a wide range of emission nebulae. Often considered the best all-around nebula filter for visual observers who want a single filter that handles most objects well. Recommended: Lumicon UHC at $90-$110 or Astronomik UHC at $80-$100. A must-have for any serious deep-sky visual observer.
Planetary Color Filters
Planetary filters are colored glass filters that enhance specific features on planetary surfaces, priced at $10-$20 each. A yellow No.12 filter enhances Jupiter cloud belts and Mars dust features and is the most versatile planetary filter. A red No.25 increases contrast of Martian surface markings. A blue No.80A enhances Jupiter Great Red Spot contrast and reveals cloud structure. A set of four color filters typically costs $25-$40 and is a worthwhile investment for planetary observers.
