How to Find Deep Sky Objects: A Beginner’s Guide to DSO Observing

Finding a faint galaxy or nebula for the first time, after 10 minutes of careful star-hopping, is one of the most satisfying moments in amateur astronomy. But it takes technique. Here’s how to find deep-sky objects reliably, from the basics of star-hopping to using setting circles and digital setting circles.

Start with the Messier Catalogue

The Messier catalogue — 110 objects compiled by French astronomer Charles Messier in the 18th century — is the perfect starting list for deep-sky beginners. These objects were bright enough for Messier to notice with his modest telescopes, which means they’re among the brightest and largest deep-sky objects in the sky. Every object on the Messier list is observable in a 70mm telescope from a reasonably dark site. Start here before venturing to fainter NGC or IC objects.

The Art of Star-Hopping

Star-hopping is the fundamental technique for finding deep-sky objects manually. The idea: identify a bright, easily-found star near your target, then use lower-brightness stars as stepping stones to navigate to the object.

Example: Finding the Orion Nebula (M42)

Look at Orion’s Belt (three bright stars in a row). Follow a line south from the belt by about the same distance as the belt’s length. You’ll see a shorter, faint row of three stars — this is Orion’s Sword. The middle star in the sword looks slightly fuzzy to the naked eye. In binoculars or a telescope at low power, it blooms into a stunning cloud of gas. That’s M42.

Example: Finding the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)

Find the Great Square of Pegasus (four stars forming a large square). From the upper-left star (Alpheratz), move two stars north to reach Mirach. Then make a 90-degree turn and move two smaller stars north-west. The fuzzy elongated smudge there is the Andromeda Galaxy — 2.5 million light-years away.

Use a Good Star Atlas

A printed star atlas is invaluable for serious DSO hunting. The Cambridge Star Atlas, Turn Left at Orion, and Sky Atlas 2000.0 are the three most recommended by experienced observers. Turn Left at Orion is particularly excellent for beginners — it’s designed specifically to teach star-hopping techniques to each major target. Don’t rely solely on phone apps, which can disrupt your dark adaptation with their screens.

Essential Technique: Averted Vision

Averted vision is one of the most important skills in deep-sky observing. The center of your retina (the fovea) is packed with cone cells for color and daylight vision, but relatively poor at detecting faint objects. The rod cells responsible for low-light vision are concentrated away from the center. By looking slightly to the side of a faint object rather than directly at it, you engage these more sensitive rod cells and the object often becomes significantly easier to see. Practice this every session.

Observing Conditions That Matter

  • Transparency: How clear the atmosphere is. Haze, humidity, and particulates reduce transparency and dim faint objects. Check Clear Outside or Meteoblue for a transparency forecast.
  • Seeing: Atmospheric steadiness. Less critical for deep-sky observing than for planetary work, but good seeing still improves views.
  • Dark-sky location: The single biggest factor for DSO observing. Even a 20-minute drive from the city can reveal objects invisible from urban backyards.
  • Moon-free nights: Observe deep-sky objects during new moon week. A bright moon washes out all but the brightest DSOs.

Building a Target List

Before each session, prepare a list of 5–10 targets appropriate for the season and your sky conditions. Apps like SkySafari let you filter objects by type, size, magnitude, and altitude — great for building a realistic session plan. Start with the brightest targets and work toward fainter ones as the night progresses and your eyes fully dark-adapt.

The Observing Log

Keep a log of every DSO you observe. Note the date, telescope and magnification used, sky conditions, and a brief description of what you saw. Many observers work toward completing all 110 Messier objects — a pursuit called the Messier Marathon (all 110 in a single night is possible in March or April). The Astronomical League offers certificates for various observing programs including the Messier Club, Herschel 400, and Double Star Club.
