The eyepiece market has exploded in recent years, with dozens of designs and hundreds of products across every price point. After testing eyepieces from budget Plossls to high-end ultra-wide designs, here is my honest guide to the major eyepiece types and when each one is the right choice.
The Plossl Eyepiece
The 4-element Plossl design is the workhorse of amateur astronomy and the baseline against which others are measured. It is available in every focal length from 4mm to 40mm, covering the full range of magnifications.
What Plossls Do Well
Plossls produce excellent central sharpness and good contrast. In the central 70-80% of the field, they are optically excellent for the price. A quality 25mm and 10mm Plossl pair covers the vast majority of observing situations.
Plossl Limitations
The apparent field of view is about 50 degrees — narrower than most observers would like, especially at lower magnifications. This creates a porthole effect. Eye relief is also short in focal lengths below 10mm, making them uncomfortable for glasses wearers at higher magnifications.
Best for: Budget-conscious beginners, high-magnification planetary work, as a starter eyepiece before upgrading.
Wide-Angle Eyepieces (60-70 degrees AFOV)
Wide-angle eyepieces expand the apparent field to 60-70 degrees — a noticeable improvement over Plossls. Popular designs include the Erfle and the modern multi-element designs from Explore Scientific and Orion.
What Wide-Angles Do Well
The wider field makes objects easier to find and center. At low to medium magnification, deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula and open clusters benefit significantly from the wider view. The observing experience is noticeably more enjoyable than a Plossl.
Wide-Angle Limitations
Some designs show edge-of-field coma or astigmatism — stars near the edge may appear slightly elongated or soft. Budget wide-angle designs are more susceptible to this. They are less ideal for fast focal ratio telescopes (f/5 and faster) which exacerbate edge aberrations.
Best for: Deep-sky visual observing at low to medium magnification, as an upgrade from Plossls on a moderate budget.
Ultra-Wide Eyepieces (80-100 degrees AFOV)
Ultra-wide eyepieces — Televue Naglers (82 degrees), Televue Ethos (100 degrees), Explore Scientific 92 and 100 degree series — produce fields so wide that observers describe them as spacewalk views. You feel surrounded by stars rather than looking through a tube.
What Ultra-Wides Do Well
The dramatically wider apparent field transforms the observing experience. Large deep-sky objects fill the field. Finding and centering objects at low power becomes trivially easy. Optically, the best ultra-wides are simply the finest eyepieces ever made — tack-sharp from center to edge.
Ultra-Wide Limitations
Cost is the main limitation. A single Televue Nagler 17mm retails for around $250; a Televue Ethos 13mm for over $400. Budget ultra-wides vary widely in quality — research specific models carefully before buying.
Best for: Experienced observers who want the ultimate visual experience, deep-sky observers who appreciate wide fields, observers who can invest in quality eyepieces that will last a lifetime.
My Recommendation by Experience Level
Beginners: start with a quality 25mm Plossl and a 10mm Plossl, plus a 2x Barlow. This gives you four effective magnifications for about $50-$70 total. Intermediate observers: upgrade to the Explore Scientific 24mm 82-degree eyepiece and 11mm 82-degree. The difference in the observing experience is immediately apparent. Advanced observers: invest in a Televue Nagler or Ethos in your most-used focal length. Use it once and you will understand why they are considered the benchmark of the industry.
